Ancient Light
The New Recording By Sanctuary

THE ICON: The angels - all inclusive personal beings - present the Word of God. The symbolic mountain in the background represents the essential skeleton upon which the body of creation is exhibited. The darkened cave framing the Word of God represents the immanence of the Divine within creation. The whole album presents the Word of God in one form or another. The icon and the music work together in an integrative relationship. "As the Word is to the ear, the icon is to the eye."

Sanctuary presents  ANCIENT LIGHT

Villanova, PA – Sanctuary, a sacred music ensemble at Villanova University, is pleased to announce ANCIENT LIGHT, its latest recording.  The album was introduced at a reception in the Villanova Room in the Connelly Center on the Villanova Campus on Sunday November 17th at 7:30pm.  Festivities included live performances by Sanctuary from the ANCIENT LIGHT recording, a multi media presentation, and refreshments.

Focusing on biblical justice, the music of ANCIENT LIGHT grew out of the tragedy
of September 11, 2001.  The lyrics are derived from the texts of Ezekiel, Isaiah, the Psalms, the Prologue of the fourth Gospel, and the Book of Revelation.  Shawn Tracy, OSA, Producer, and Dan Mason, Musical Director composed the music.

Three sections of music entitled ‘spirals’ are woven together by chanted responsorials.  Spiral One centers on promise and hope.  Spiral Two focuses on “Jerusalem the Golden,” (the metaphorical city where God’s peace resides), and Spiral Three captures the longing of the human heart and the desire of all people for peace.  The Epilogue culminates with a mantra that mirrors St. Augustine’s well-known prayer from The Confessions, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until we rest in you.”
